Todd Strauss has more than 30 years of experience in the energy industries. Todd received his Ph.D. in IEOR from UC-Berkeley in 1992. Supervised by Professor Shmuel Oren, Todd’s dissertation was on electricity pricing. While a graduate student, Todd was an intern and then Regulatory Fellow at the California Public Utilities Commission.
Todd was Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Management Science at Yale School of Management, where he taught MBA students statistics, program evaluation, and strategy in the energy industries. During his five years on the faculty at Yale, Todd supervised more than 50 student projects and published 8 articles in refereed journals.
In 1997, as the electricity industry was deregulating and privatizing in many parts of the world, Todd became a full-time consultant. He assembled and led a multidisciplinary, multisite team that analyzed energy prices and asset values, and built decision support tools for clients. He then led a quantitative group at an energy trading firm, designing and implementing systems for pricing energy derivatives and valuing energy assets.
Todd joined Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) in 2003, where he led quantitative modeling and analytics teams for 20 years. As Senior Director of Analytics, Innovation, and Strategy, Todd advanced analytical maturity enterprise-wide. Notable
projects included: strategy for PG&E’s natural gas infrastructure business, assessing and mitigating operational risk associated with aging electric assets, PG&E's preparation and implementation as California launched its greenhouse gas emissions regulatory framework and trading program, and various initiatives in integrated resource planning, commodity
hedging, and financial and operational risk management.
Todd is currently an independent consultant to clients in the energy industries. He also serves as Chief Product Officer for a startup that provides analytic products and services that enable electric grid operators to enhance their use of battery energy storage.
Todd holds an S.B. in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an S.M. in Mathematics (statistics) from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California at Berkeley.
