This semester, students taking IEOR 170 encountered terrific success in their creative design projects and ideas.

Ten teams of students gained hands-on experience designing real world solutions based on the theories learned in the course. This semester the problems revolved around how to better manually adjust irrigation emitters in vineyards. California is the top wine-producing state in the U.S. and with demand for water growing and supply in question researchers are working to create precision irrigation techniques to help save water.

M.Eng alumnus Han Jin, founder and CEO of Lucid VR was recently featured in Inc. '30 under 30' list.  Lucid VR's first product is the $499 LucidCam, a virtual reality camera that lets users capture the world in 3D.

"It is among the first virtual reality cameras geared toward the average consumer," said Jin.

IEOR visiting scholar and Syracuse University Professor Burak Kazaz's research on wine analytics was recently featured in a Forbes. In Kazaz's paper, Wine Analytics: Fine Wine Pricing and Selection under Weather and Market Uncertainty, he argues that distributors that carefully invest in the wine futures market, "could improve profits as much as 21%."

IEOR Professor Rob Leachman will make an invited presentation titled "Economics of Far East - USA Import Supply Chains" at the 17th annual Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference in Long Beach, CA, on February 28, 2017. IEOR professors Max Shen, Shmuel Oren, Xin Guo, Ilan Adler, and Javad Lavaei are working on some of the most pressing problems of our time as lead researchers for the Environmental Science and New Energy Technology Research Center at the two-year-old Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI).

The center brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley and Tsinghua University to address energy, transportation, and pollution issues.

The news ranking look at 15 different categories, ranging from best jobs to specific sectors like business and healthcare. The rankings are calculated based on the "most important aspects of a job, including growth potential, work-life balance and salary." The specific components measured were: "10-year growth volume, 10-year growth percentage, median salary, employment rate, future job prospects, stress level and work-life balance."
