IEOR Seminar Series: Matt Draper and Bo Liao from Micron Technology

IEOR seminars occur on Mondays throughout the fall semester in room 3108 of Etcheverry Hall. Seminars feature leading-edge research from experts in industrial engineering and operations research who come from local, national, and international institutions. Seminars are open to students, faculty, and the public.

Talk Title: Hierarchical Linear Programming at Scale

Abstract: Since 2018, the semiconductor industry has faced numerous supply chain challenges: tariffs on Chinese-manufactured imports to the United States, restrictions on sales to Huawei, demand uncertainty due to COVID-19, and unprecedented material shortages in the global semiconductor ecosystem. To better manage these and future supply chain disruptions, Micron has implemented the industry’s most advanced master planning system, employing hierarchical linear programming at scale. The solution is a Digital Twin to Micron’s entire supply chain – replicating both manufacturing processes in detail as well as automating business strategy. Among other features, the solution contains more than 700 distinct business objectives, 10 parallel engines tailored for numerous planning functions, 6 solves per week for maximum agility, and integrated playbooks that respond to market dynamics. Results include meaningful improvements to solved demand (for the same constraints), customer delivery performance, working capital, and manufacturing costs.

Bios:
Bo Liao leads Operations Research Team at Micron Technology. She is responsible for developing advanced mathematical models and algorithms for supply chain optimization at Micron. She holds a BBM in Information Management and Information Systems from Tsinghua University, an MS in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, an MS in Business Administration, and PhD in Operations Management from University of California, Berkeley. Bo is a recipient of “Young Professional Emerging Leader Award” by CSCMP (Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals), and a recognized technical leader by “Technical Leadership Program” at Micron. Prior to joining Micron, she had worked at SanDisk and Western Digital for 6 years.

Matt Draper leads Micron’s Supply Chain Optimization team, which is responsible for building and deploying operations research and data science models, multi-echelon inventory optimization, product design for supply chain, and customer service level analytics. He led the cross-functional effort to implement the industry’s most advanced master planning system, which leverages hierarchical linear programming. Prior to Micron, Matt led various teams in data science, logistics, and supply chain engineering at Nike and SanDisk. Matt holds a BA in Business Management Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MS in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley.
