Structural racism and social inequalities have led to deep and persistent health inequalities. The Center for Population Health Sciences (PHS) is focused on harnessing data to address these inequalities and improve population health. Toward this end, we have created a world-class data ecosystem that hosts over 100 datasets, supporting 900 users, 600 studies, and 2,000 projects. PHS’ data team is responsible for managing PHS’ data ecosystem, advancing critical research projects and initiatives, developing novel data products and services, and acquiring new datasets that enable population health research. The Senior Health and Data Lead (Biostatistician 3) will be part of PHS’ leadership team and will have the opportunity to:


  • Develop and/or apply novel data curation, metadata, and analytic techniques and approaches to Medicare and/or Medicaid data.
  • Pursue their own research related to reducing health disparities (20% time).
  • Have a real-world impact, advancing health equity. PHS is an applied research center focused on improving population health and reducing health disparities.
  • Learn from and collaborate with renowned data science and health experts. The Sr. Health and Data Lead will be working directly with Stanford faculty from across the university (e.g., sociology, medicine, economics, education) on interesting complex projects utilizing large-scale administrative datasets to reduce social inequalities.
  • Create a new model that marries data science and community engagement approaches to reducing social inequalities. The PHS data team is working in close collaboration with local partners (e.g., several local public health departments and community-based organizations) to leverage its data resources to respond to community priorities.


Roles & Responsibilities


  • Independently manage complex projects, design studies, analyze data, and disseminate findings.
  • Working in close collaboration with the faculty director and senior team to develop data vision and strategy.
  • Consult with Stanford researchers, providing guidance in the following areas: study design, statistical programming, analysis and interpretation, and presentation of results. As this is a Biostatistician 3 role, it is expected that this individual can work independently and act as the lead statistician on projects, assisting investigators on the development of proposals and/or grants.
  • Oversee junior biostatisticians on cleaning of data, creation of analytic files, and quality control.
  • Led statistical projects related to collaborations on topics including statistical software, and evaluation of methods. 
  • Develop oral and written dissemination of findings for conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Other Duties

  • Identify appropriate statistical tools for analysis.
  • Implement data analysis through statistical programming.
  • Mentor clinical investigators on relevant research methods.
  • Implement studies to address statistical issues arising from collaborations.

The successful candidate will work at the Stanford University campus in Palo Alto, California. Complies with and supports University and government health and safety regulations and policies.


Experience working with Medicaid and Medicare data.


The data core consists of a number of commercial claims, EMR, registry, and other administrative data. The successful candidate will have expertise in health care claims data, data management, annotation, and the use of these datasets for population health.


Excellent verbal and written communication skills are desired in order to provide feedback to members of the scientific community to facilitate the description of data, effectively provide documentation and specifications to co-workers during research development, and contribute to the drafting of scientific literature and grant applications using results from analyses.



Master’s degree in biostatistics, statistics or related field and at least 5 years of experience or Ph.D. in biostatistics, statistics or related field.



  • Proficient in at least two of R, SAS, SPSS, or STATA.
  • Skills in descriptive analysis, modeling of data, and graphic interfaces.
  • Outstanding ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in at least one area of expertise, which may include coordinating studies; statistical methodology such as missing data, survival analysis, statistical genetics, or informatics; statistical computing; database design (e.g., expertise in RedCAP or MySQL); graphical techniques (e.g., expertise in Illustrator).






  • Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
