Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Vehicle and Mobility Systems Research Section in the Buildings and Transportation Service Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

The Vehicle and Mobility Systems Research Section focuses on accelerating the development of advanced vehicles and complex mobility systems through advances in connected and autonomous vehicle technologies, communications, systems integration, simulation frameworks, and decision science. The objective of the hiring group is to provide leadership in advanced hardware-in-the-loop research, simulation frameworks, and sensor emulation to accelerate the development of transportation technologies from component-level to full vehicle and ultimately traffic system applications.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and improve internal tools, frameworks, and interfaces for co-simulation of various modeling and simulation platforms and packages as well as integration with embedded systems
  • Work as part of a team to develop and implement a cooperative driving automation (CDA) for connected vehicles in various scenarios and applications including in simulation, in laboratory, and on controlled roadways
  • Development and implementation of advanced software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems to support advanced powertrain and CAV control system design, validation, and verification
  • Working with R&D staff to develop, prepare reports, publications, and journal articles based on going research

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming Languages: Python, C, C++
  • Proficient with Matlab/Simulink
  • Proficient with Real-Time HIL systems (dSpace or others)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals, or presentations at national meetings, are expected
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
