ORISE fellowship opportunities are available with the Office of Innovation, Development, Evaluation, and Analytics (IDEA), Division of Global Migration & Quarantine (DGMQ) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA. This is a full-time, one-year, stipend-supported opportunity. Start date is flexible but no later than September 30, 2022. Fellows should live in the Atlanta-Metro Area or be willing to relocate upon acceptance of fellowship. 

IDEA’s mission is to deliver insights and solutions to support DGMQ by leveraging an agile team with focused resources and specialized skillsets in analytics, partnership development, evaluation, and innovation. We are creating a new data science team that will study globally mobile populations to enhance situational awareness, scientific understanding, and decision-making.

You will learn how to: 

• Assist in cleaning and preparing data for analysis 
• Create and maintain database documentation 
• Make strategic recommendations on data collection, integration, storage, access, analysis, and retention 
• Identify relevant available data from internal and external data sources 
• Lead the design and deployment of enhancements and fixes 
• Adapt existing approaches and apply new developments to critical problems in public health data science 
• Identify novel or obscure problems and be versatile and innovative in adapting and modifying precedents, methods, and techniques 
• Assess feasibility, effectiveness, and necessity of unusual approaches and identify potential benefits

Ideal qualifications/experience include: 

• Master’s or PhD in computer science, information technology, or similar 
• Knowledge of computer systems and software concepts such as computer architecture, cloud technology, and file storage/file sharing 
• Experience designing, developing, constructing, testing, and maintaining, data pipelines, data warehouses and data lakes using Azure services 
• Experience designing automatic scheduling and monitoring methods 
• Integrating multiple data sources by using joins on common fields 
• ETL and QA/QC 
• Accessing and extracting data through APIs 
• Advanced concepts of automation and information processing 
• Enjoys collaborative work 
• Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships, overcome skepticism, and gain cooperation 
• Capable of building powerful websites/applications 
• Ability to engage users for application feedback and apply the feedback to improve system

Organizational Description:   

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
