Intern, Podcast Development & Production:

At American Public Media, we make podcasts for curious listeners. Our shows explore new ideas, uncover truths, and tell human stories. All of our shows are powered by you, our listeners.

The Podcast Development & Production internship is open to recent graduates and early career audio professionals interested in content development and podcast production. You will learn about the development process – from creating a show pitch to piloting and testing. The development team will benefit from your perspective and feedback, as well as your ability to support on-going production processes. Our audiences are best served when our staff represents as many perspectives as possible, and we believe that training and supporting new talent is the best way to diversify and improve our team.


Key Learning Goals:

  • Learn and participate in the show development process, from initial pitch review/creation to piloting and audience testing
  • Develop the skills to research and present a compelling podcast pitch
  • Learn the process of moving an idea from the page to an audio product ready for the audience
  • Develop skills in audience engagement and audience-first show development



  • Learn the key steps of podcast development: reviewing pitches, writing a pitch, presenting an idea, creating a pilot, learning the basics of budgets and legal documents
  • Develop the skills to research and present a compelling podcast pitch
  • Observe and participate in the editorial processes of at least two teams outside of development
  • Assist in the production of a pilot episode (e.g., scheduling studios, booking guests, editing audio.)
  • Shadow one or more current show teams, and assist in production as series needs dictate

Required Qualifications:

  • Seniors in an undergraduate or graduate program OR have earned a degree within the last 12 months
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week for the duration of this internship
  • Basic journalism or documentary development experience (interviewing, reporting and /or research experience, from work experience or classroom experience)
  • Interest in and familiarity with podcasts and audio programming
  • Basic audio editing skills
  • Ability to collaborate closely with internal and external production teams
  • Ability to write, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
