Have you ever wondered about the state of diversity in the US asset management industry? The impact of venture capital investment in Latin America or Nepal? Or wanted to evaluate the impact of efforts to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in Australia? Bella Private Markets, a consulting firm led by Dr. Josh Lerner of Harvard Business School, is seeking an analyst to help with projects just like these.

Bella Description

Bella Private Markets focuses exclusively on providing solutions to the challenges facing the private capital industry. Bella combines rigorous academic approaches with real world industry expertise to provide actionable insights for our clients. We focus on complex, customized projects that require thorough analysis, whether quantitative or qualitative in nature, to help our clients improve performance, optimize operations, and chart winning strategies for the future.

Job Description: Analyst

Bella analysts engage in a broad range of research related to private equity, venture capital, and innovation. Analysts work in a supportive team environment to produce strategic reviews, bespoke research projects, innovation and investment policy assessments, and training sessions on industry best practices. They perform quantitative, data-intensive analysis, explore academic and industry literature, conduct interviews, and prepare case studies. Previous projects to which analysts contributed include:

  • Strategic recommendations for the corporate VC unit of a Fortune 500 company;
  • Risk modeling for a multi-billion dollar collateralized private equity product;
  • A report on the state of racial and gender diversity in the asset management industry;
  • Performance reviews of private equity firm investments;
  • Research on the effects of foreign exchange hedging on private equity investments.

Bella offers analysts the opportunity to explore in-depth the notoriously opaque private equity industry. Beyond working with Dr. Josh Lerner, named one of the most influential people in private equity, analysts also work with private equity investors themselves.

Location

Boston, MA (hybrid work schedule)

Qualifications

Basic qualifications for the analyst position include:

  • An undergraduate degree in Economics, Policy, Mathematics, or a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • A master’s degree in Economics or a related field is preferred.

Ideal candidates for the Bella Private Markets analyst position have the following skills and characteristics:

Analysts should have strong writing and storytelling skills. Analysts draft professional quality material under time constraints.

Analysts should be comfortable with data. Analysts navigate academic journals and private equity databases to find specific articles and data of interest. They are also involved in quantitative modeling projects. Experience with statistical programs (such as R) is preferred, but not required.

Bella projects are often open-ended in nature and are completed without specific guidelines. Analysts should therefore be prepared to help scope projects, develop methodologies, and offer feedback on a broad range of subjects.

Analysts synthesize large amounts of information to create thorough yet coherent reports on many complex topics. The value-add on many projects stems from the analyst’s ability to use a variety of sources to present a clear picture—from general context to fine detail—of a given subject. Bella launches analysts into the world of private equity and will often ask analysts to write pieces on which they have minimal prior knowledge.

Analysts should be team players. Analysts must enjoy working on projects in a collaborative environment and enjoy learning from others.

Note: This job requires US work authorization. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required. If hired, candidates will be required to pass a background check.
