IEOR PhD student Matt Olfat's and assistant professor Anil Aswani's paper "Spectral algorithms for computing fair support vector machines" won the INFORMS 2018 Data Mining & Decision Analytics Workshop best student paper award. Olfat presented the paper at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

IEOR PhD student Salar Fattahi and EECS assistant professor in residence Somayeh Sojoudi have won the INFORMS 2018 Data Mining Best Paper Award. Fattahi and Sojoudi presented their paper "Graphical Lasso and Thresholding: Equivalence and Closed-form Solutions" at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

Professor Candi Yano was awarded the INFORMS George E. Kimball Medal in recognition of distinguished service to the Institute and to the profession of operations research and the management sciences. The award is a medallion and a certificate. INFORMS, or otherwise known as the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, is a organization dedicated to the ORMS field.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) has just selected eighteen teams, including two with UC Berkeley Engineering researchers, to participate in the new Grid Optimization (GO) Competition.

IEOR assistant professor Zeyu Zheng, joint with Xiaocheng Li, Yufeng Zheng, and Zhenpeng Zhou, have been selected as finalists for the 2018 MSOM Data Driven Research Competition. Xiaocheng and Zeyu will present their paper “Demand Prediction, Predictive Shipping, and Product Allocation for Large-scale E-commerce” at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

Professor Goldberg was highlighted in a recent article by The Economist on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Ken Goldberg and Vinod Kumar, the chief executive of Tata communications, created an optimistic report detailing the possible effects of AI on blue collar and white collar workers. Their report highlights the possibility of increasing job satisfaction by removing mundane tasks that impact productive work. They hope that AI can provide workers more time to be creative.

George Dantzig is considered a founding father of industrial engineering and operations research, but one of his most incredible achievements took place while he was still a doctoral student at Berkeley. Arriving late to a statistics class, Dantzig scrawled down two problems written on the blackboard, thinking that they were a homework assignment. He solved the problems and handed them in, only to learn weeks later that these were not homework, but two famously unsolved statistics problems.
