Admission Requirements:

1. Submit a completed online application.
2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or recognized equivalent.
3. Sufficient undergraduate education for graduate work in your chosen field.
4. A satisfactory scholastic average, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0-scale.
5. (Optional for Fall 2021) Score of the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the past 5 years. For Fall 2019 admission, test taken before June 2013 will be not be accepted.
6. International applicants: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 90 for the internet-based test (iBT) or 570 for the paper-based test (PBT), taken within the past two years. For Fall 2020 admission, test taken before June 2017 will not be accepted.
   • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also acceptable. The minimum acceptable score is 7 on a 9-point scale on your most recent exam. Only test taken within the past two years is acceptable.
   • Also, please keep in mind that ETS sends us test scores (GRE and TOEFL) twice a month electronically, so even if you've received them, it does not mean that we have. Because this is the case, it's a good idea to take the tests as early as possible in advance.
7. Electronic recommendation letters. (Three required.)

Please read the Graduate Division Web page on Admission Requirements. If you received or are a candidate to receive your undergraduate degree from an institution outside the United States, you will need to read the section on International Applicants in Admission Requirements.

Application Process:

The application process is entirely electronic. Please do not mail any documents to the IEOR Department.

Your application will only be considered complete when all forms are submitted electronically and all official test scores have been received by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

The following materials can be submitted independently and in any order.

1. Online Application
   • You can only apply to one program under one department per admission cycle.
   • Application fee
   • If you have completed a degree, please upload your diploma or degree certificate along with your transcript in the Transcript Upload section.
   • For international applicants, please upload your transcripts in both English and your native language.
   • GPA: We require applicants report their GPA as it reads on their transcript. International students do not need to convert their grades to the 4.0 system. Graduate Division's minimum GPA is 3.0 or equivalent.
   • Please remember to submit your application. Complete but unsubmitted applications will not be reviewed.
2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) - GRE Scores Not Required for Fall 2021 Admissions
   • Please send the official scores to Berkeley at institution code 4833 by the deadline. Please do not send them to the IEOR Department.
   • There is no minimum scores required.
   • GRE Subject Tests are not required, but we encourage applicants to take the GRE Math Subject Test.
   • Only tests taken within the past 5 years are acceptable. For Fall 2020's admissions, tests taken before June 2015 will not be accepted.
   • Test results for the General GREs must be sent to code 4833 only (the Berkeley institution code).
3. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
   • Please send the official score to Berkeley at institution code 4833 by the deadline. Please do not send it to the IEOR Department.
   • For information regarding TOEFL exemption, please visit here.
   • The minimum score is 90 for the internet-based test (iBT) and 570 for the paper-based test (PBT).
   • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the only acceptable substitute. Other tests such as the TOEIC are not acceptable.
   • Only tests taken within the past 2 years are acceptable. For Fall 2020's admissions, tests taken before June 2018 will not be accepted.
4. Letters of Recommendation
   • A total of 3 letters are required.
   • You can send letter of recommendation requests in the Recommendations section of the online application.
   • Letters of recommendation must be received by the IEOR Department electronically by the deadline.
   • See Career Center for additional guidance.
5. Statement of Purpose
   • Please describe your aptitude and motivation for graduate study in your area of specialization, including your preparation for this field of study, your academic plans or research interests in your chosen area of study, and your future career goals. Please be specific about why UC Berkeley would be a good intellectual fit for you.
6. Personal Statement
   • In an essay, discuss how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Please include any educational, familial, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges, or opportunities relevant to your academic journey; how you might contribute to social or cultural diversity within your chosen field; and/or how you might serve educationally underrepresented segments of society with your degree.
7. Transcript
   • IEOR department does not require official transcripts at the time of submitting the application. Unofficial transcripts and other required academic records should be uploaded, in PDF format, with the application. If an offer of admission is made, applicants will be required to send to the Graduate Division the official paper documents for verification. Offers will not be considered final until the Graduate Division has received the official documents that match the uploaded record.

Application Result:

If your application is successful, the IEOR Department will notify you that you have been recommended for admission. Only the Dean of the Graduate Division can offer official admission. You have not been officially admitted until you have received the official admission letter from the Dean. Admission letters will be issued around mid-March.

Accepting Your Offer:

Applicants receiving an admission offer will also receive a copy of A Guide for New Graduate Students from the Graduate Division. This document details the steps necessary to complete the three required forms online: the Statement of Intention to Register Form, Statement of Legal Residence Form, and the Non-Immigrant Information Form (for non-US citizens).
