SGI is committed to taking part in the global initiative to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, and is actively investigating the potential for rock from our mines to sequester atmospheric carbon. To this end, SGI is seeking a candidate for an R&D co-op position to expand our ability to analyze the capacity of our mineral aggregates to sequester carbon dioxide.
Co-Opportunity is a chance for you to learn about your chosen field in a real work environment with experienced Specialty Granules LLC (SGI) professionals. Each assignment lasts a semester, and you may be invited to return to SGI for additional terms while you continue your education. You ‘ll be involved in high-profile projects as an integral member of our working teams.

During your assignment, you will have a mentor – someone who will act as a coach to help you better understand both SGI and your work responsibilities. You will receive competitive pay, and may be eligible for a temporary living allowance.
- Define equipment and material needs and develop analytical techniques to quantify carbon capture
- Conduct literature searches to determine current state-of-the-art technology in quantifying carbon capture
- Performing geologic, coating, and raw material performance testing activities
- Conducting problem-solving and troubleshooting investigations to assure root causes are identified and countermeasures and prevention are fully implemented
- Providing technical support and analytical evaluation for material issues
- Involvement with test procedure development and implementation
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry (preferred), Engineering, or Materials Science.
- All candidates must have a minimum 2.8 GPA, and at least sophomore standing
- Comfortable performing basic mathematical operations that are essential for chemistry applications (e.g. determining the amount of moles of substance in a sample)
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without need for employer-sponsored visa (work permit)
- Problem solving, project management, collaboration and communication skills
- Must have ability to generate accurate and concise technical reports
- Proficient with office productivity tools: Microsoft Office Suite and Google (G-Suite)
- Familiarity with analytical methods of chemical quantification in either a lab or class setting is a plus.
