The Research CI Storage Lead serves as the researcher-facing service lead for a portfolio of research data storage and transfer services that are integrated with core enterprise infrastructure managed by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). These include ResearchDrive, Globus, and other services.
The person in this position provides service leadership in partnership with core operational teams at DoIT, including the Storage and Data Protection, Cybersecurity, Identity and Access Management, and Network Engineering teams. The Research CI Storage Lead also collaborates closely with IT staff in departments and units across campus to ensure integration of research storage and transfer services with infrastructure, policies, and key resources in each unit.
As the primary contact to the research community for ResearchDrive and Globus, the Research CI Storage Lead reaches out to researchers and support their needs, builds relationships with the distributed IT staff who support the researchers, and works with team members to integrate storage and transfer systems with research cores, computing centers, and other resources that comprise UW-Madison’s research cyberinfrastructure. The person in this position will ensure that these services support the full data lifecycle of researchers and enable compliance with campus, federal, and other policies and mandates for data protection, security, access, and retention.
The Research CI Storage Lead will be responsible for annual reviews and will gather input from advisory groups to inform ongoing planning for enhancements and integrations that support the evolving data management needs and requirements of researchers.
Applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, and cyber infrastructure (CI) research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge, to provide highly complex research, technology, and software development solutions for research. Performs in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting medium to large projects of broad scope and complexities, provides leadership to staff, and serves as a subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders.
- 15% May lead a team of research and technical staff providing CI resources and support. Assists in the design, implementation, and recommendation of new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex research computing, data science, and CI projects
- 30% Applies advanced research computing, data, and/or CI research and development concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy, and evaluate highly complex research computing (software and/or hardware), data science or computational science workflows, or CI software and technologies
- 20% Applies advanced research and development practices, community standards, and department policies and procedures. Contributes to research and CI policy development for the department or research center
- 10% Contributes to or prepares reports of project status and/or technical research for professional organizations, government/sponsors, review boards, and design reviews
- 5% May advise institutional or divisional leadership on CI topics
- 10% May lead the planning, scheduling, and/or assignment and review of work for a defined project, program, or function
- 10% Provides one on one consultations with departments and researchers to determine research data cyberinfrastructure needs and match with appropriate solutions

The candidate selected for this position will initially perform a combination of on-site and remote work subject to an approved remote work agreement (RWA) agreement, which is reviewed and approved annually. In the future, this position will likely perform a combination of onsite and remote work. Remote work requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a University provided computer.
APPOINTMENT TYPE, DURATION:
Minimum $80,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
