SUSTAINING TECHNICAL AND ANALYTIC RESOURCES INTERN TITLE: Maternal and Infant HIV Treatment InternHOST ORGANIZATION: Pediatric Maternal Clinical Branch, Prevention, Care and Treatment Division, Office of HIV/AIDS, Bureau of Global Health, United States Agency for International DevelopmentLOCATION: Washington, DCPOSITION LEVEL: Masters LevelINT-P1-049 SALARY: $1,826 bi-weeklyANTICIPATED TIMEFRAME: 6 Months STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONSustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Its purpose is twofold: (1) Through individual fellowships, STAR will help strengthen the capacity of diverse American and low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) health professionals at all levels to make innovative contributions to global health (GH); and (2) STAR will create ground-breaking opportunities for both US and LMIC GH academic institutions and other groups, including professional associations, to create systems for open-access knowledge sharing, resulting in effective partnerships. STAR’s individual and institutional participants are contributing to the development of self-sustaining systems and tools that will produce global citizens with the full spectrum of relevant health competencies. STAR is managed by the Public Health Institute and implemented in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONBackground:USAID provides global technical leadership on HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment and monitors the impact of the Agency’s HIV/AIDS programs. USAID is a key partner in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and works closely with other USG agencies on this initiative. This position sits within the USAID Office of HIV/AIDS, in the Prevention, Care and Treatment Division, Adult Clinical Branch. More about PEPFAR may be found at https://www.usaid.gov/global-health. Introduction:The Intern will be assigned to the Prevention, Care and Treatment Division of the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) within the Bureau for Global Health. OHA is primarily responsible for leading the Agency’s efforts within President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a multibillion, multifaceted approach to combating the disease around the world. Reporting structure:The Intern will work closely with the Senior Prevention, Care and Treatment (PCT) Division and Pediatric Maternal Clinical Branch (PMB) and receive technical guidance from the Lead of the Maternal and Infant Technical Cluster within the Division of Prevention Care and Treatment, who will serve as his/her onsite manager. OUTCOMESBy the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:PEPFAR strategies to identify, enroll, and retain individuals in HIV treatment programs, with a focus on pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as infants.Implementation of PEPFAR programs through the review of quarterly data and improvement of country-level workplans.Coordinating HQ-based team activities in pursuit of supporting PEPFAR program implementation.Familiarity with USAID and PEPFAR programming. Essential Duties:Support the OHA Maternal and Infant Technical Cluster in identifying, enrolling, and retaining individuals on HIV treatment, with a focus on children and adolescents.Coordinate HQ-based Technical Cluster activities, including quarterly reviews and technical inputs into program operational guidance and partner workplans.Assist with implementation of USAID’s HIV programs through the review of quarterly data.Tracking needed corrective actions across country programs related to mothers and infants.Support country-specific quarterly PEPFAR data review for the Maternal and Infant Technical Cluster. Anticipated learning outcomes:Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.Gain exposure to HIV/AIDSProgramming and data analysis and application through global health programming.Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor. INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTSRequired:Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.Demonstrated experience in research and analysis, with strong writing skills.Ability to manipulate data and data imagery charts using Excel and web-based applications.Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks.US citizenship or US permanent residency required. Additional skills (preferred):Fluency in French, Portuguese, or an African language preferred.Knowledge of HIV/AIDS preferred.
