However, when the facility reopens, the participant will be required to perform their research at NVFEL, and telework will not be allowed except in special situations, such as closure due to extreme weather.Research Project: The National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL), is seeking an undergraduate computer science or Information Technology student with desires, familiarity and/or experience in Information Technology or Data Science. The participant will research IT platforms, IT preservation methods, data computation methods, large scale data storage, and massive data repositories in discovering the importance information technology and science play in environmental data modeling and other environmental data analysis. The participant will perform research alongside computer scientists, information technologists, data modelers, and other professionals in the fields of Information Technology, Information System Services and Data Science/Modeling. An in-depth view of a National Laboratory’s technologies and complex technology platforms will be provided to the participant. The participant will be provided research and development equipment to aid in self-learning through advancing the understanding of discovered technologies, methods, configurations and information solutions. Learning Objectives: The participant will gain a deep understanding of IT technologies, Data Science structures, analytical platforms and large scale data computation and repositories, with an emphasis on IT infrastructure research and development and next-generation Data Science models and platform constructions. The participant will further enhance their understanding of Information Technology and the value gained through innovation and planning. At the conclusion of the project, the participant will realize how creating next-generation IT infrastructures and Data Science platforms for collecting what appears to be insignificant data, when analyzed deeply using in-depth data science tools on a properly designed IT infrastructure and Data Science platform, can actually change the air we breathe.Mentor(s): The mentor for this opportunity is Fidel Galano (galano.fidel@epa.gov).
