RAND is seeking highly motivated analysts to employ specialized modeling and simulation, and data analysis skills to support some or all phases of research as part of multi-disciplinary teams. Modeling & Simulation Analysts are expected to help develop approaches for using quantitative analysis to address complex policy problems; collect or simulate, clean, organize, analyze, and visualize data; and help communicate visual and written results of these analyses to internal and external audiences.

Modeling & Simulation Analysts are proficient in using one or more programming languages and data analysis/visualization/simulation packages. These analysts may demonstrate depth of knowledge in one or more types of military simulations.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will have experience using one or more programming languages and data analysis/visualization/simulation packages (e.g., C++, C#, Python, R, Java, SQL, Visual Basic, SAS, MatLab, Mathematica, Stata, NetLogo, Octave, Anaconda, Keras, TensorFlow, Hadoop, BigML, Pandas, Tableau, Sigma JS, MS Visio). Additionally, knowledge of at least one type of military simulation program (e.g., Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling – AFSIM, Joint Conflict and Tactical Simulation – JCATS, One Semi-Automated Forces – OneSAF, or Synthetic Theater Operations Research Model – STORM) is strongly preferred.

Successful applicants will have no more than five years of professional or academic experience post-master’s degree.

Successful applicants will also submit evidence of strong communication skills (such as documentation of theses, publications, conference presentations, coursework, and/or examples of communication tasks during prior employment), and the ability to work in a team environment (through noting team-based coursework, internships, prior employment that included teamwork, experience in a research laboratory, etc.).

Education Requirements

A master’s degree is required; a thesis or capstone project is preferred. Preferred degrees include applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, operations research, data science, and physical sciences. A research internship or professional experience in a research-related area is preferred.

Security Clearance

This position requires the ability to obain and maintain a U.S. security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed.
