BARINGS

Barings’ dedicated Emerging Markets team manages over $15 billion in assets across corporates, sovereign, local debt and blended strategies. An integrated team of 24 seasoned portfolio managers, analysts and traders analyses the sovereign debt of over 75 countries and the corporate debt of over 600 companies.

FELLOWSHIP TOPIC

The Emerging Markets Sovereign team is looking for a graduate student for the summer of 2022 to be based in Boston, London or Paris to work on the following topic: Are Human and Financial Capital Moving to Safer and Higher Quality Destinations? The main objective of the fellowship topic is to analyse the movements of human and financial capital. Is there a link between the rise and behaviour of private savings to the hypothesis of political discontent, polarization, and potentially increasingly precautionary nature of savings? This role will analyse the drivers by considering the following questions: Are social contracts breaking down? Are people’s confidence diminishing in governments, institutions, laws/contracts, and traditional money? What are these reasons? Is there evidence of high levels of precautionary savings in Developed and Emerging Markets related to the reasons stated? Is there evidence of these savings chasing safer credits, currencies, and destinations? Is there evidence of permanent or temporary flight for quality assets? Do the hypothesized diminution of confidence in governments/institutions and flight to quality stem from growing inequality in Emerging countries? Does this also apply to emerging market countries converging into developed countries, in per capita GDP? This project should also explore how savings take place in the world, as middle classes emerge in EM, populations become more monetized, and savings are concentrated more in private than public sector.

SKILLS

The candidate should have training in macroeconomics and econometrics/statistics. A background in political science and knowledge of the literature would be a plus.

PROCESS

Only graduate applicants will be considered. Deadline for application is Friday, 21 February 2022. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted shortly after that for interviews. Applying to more than one fellowship is possible- please apply to each position of interest.
