Plato Learning, an outdoor mythology-based day camps for kids ages 7-15 is hiring energetic leaders and adventure role models to serve as summer Camp Directors in San Francisco. Camp Directors are responsible for creating exciting, engaging environments for all campers and staff that come to Plato Learning for intense hero training, epic adventures, and unforgettable other-worldly experiences.
What does that mean? (Job Responsibilities):
● Build a Community of Heroes. From administrative needs, to coaching and empowering staff, to uplifting the curriculum materials we provide, you’ll work to organize and launch our program’s vision, bringing magic to life for campers and staff alike, for a summer unlike any other.
● Collaborate with a Team of Leaders. Working with our National Program Director and your fellow Camp Directors, you’ll become better leaders; attending training and coaching sessions, using ingenuity to add flavor to our curricular resources, and tracking your workflow effectively with the sustained energy of team spirit.
● Empower Your Demigod Staff Members. Hiring and recruiting a staff of anywhere from 6-30 staff members (dependent on camp size), you’ll imbue your staff of demigods with resiliency through training and provide on-going feedback and mentorship that inspires them to reach their full potential.
● Build Partnerships with Mortals. As the face of Camp Half-Blood in your local community, you’ll build relationships with local parents, park officials, and community partners, learning how to build strong bonds that allow our demigod realm to exist amongst the mortals we serve. Working with the team at headquarters, you’ll manage your camp’s online registration database, identify campers who’ve grown with us for years, and introduce new demigods to their first training experiences.
● Guide the Demigod Experience. Camp Directors keep camp running smoothly by setting the standards for our camper’s experience both in a curricular and from a safety perspective. We encourage campers to explore beyond what they believe to be possible, while also maintaining safety standards that adhere to Plato Learning’s policies, as well as those mandated locally by state.
● 5-10 hours/week of remote professional development, training, and prep work from mid-Feb-May to create the best season possible.
● In-Person Leadership Summit Weekend (Friday-Sunday) in late March/ early April (exact date TBD)
● Facilitate 40 hour In-Person Training week, the week before each program’s start date
● 45-50 hours/week in-person at your camp location (our programs run for 6-10 weeks)
What skills are we looking for?
● Experience working with children K-8 in schools, after school programs or other structured capacities
● Leadership Experience (or as we call it- Hero-Training) – staff hiring and management experience a plus
● Ability to work part-time mid-Feb through May/June (~5-10 hours per week), and full-time in Summer ● Strong conflict resolution, communication, and problem-solving abilities
● Strong collaborators/delegators, who are compassionate, curious, and enthusiastic
● Excitement about working in an outdoor fast-paced environment in the summer
● Camp experience is a bonus, though not required
● Courageous Commitment; we find that Camp Directors benefit from a 3-year relationship with Plato Learning (at minimum. We strive to help team members grow with the company)
Camp Directors find their way to us from a variety of places, including: school teaching, after-school programming, coaching, camp counseling & leadership, grad school programs, and entrepreneurs hoping to learn skills to run a service-oriented business.
Plato Learning would like to put forth this statistic. Benefits and Compensation:
● Financial Reward. A first year Camp Director earns approx $10,000-$15,000 over the course of 7 months, and more, should they choose to return for an additional summer. This includes: ○ Pre-Season Professional Development (Feb-May): 5-10 hours/week at $20 an hour ○ During Camp: $1200-$1300/week for your program’s weeks of camp (7-11 weeks, depending on size and location and includes 1 week of in-person training)
○ Post-Camp Bonus: Up to $250, based on performance
○ Referral Bonus: $50 bonus for any referred applicants who are hired for a seasonal position
○ Retainer: $1000 for the months of September-December to assist with community-building work in the off-season
● Opportunity for Advancement. As Plato Learning grows, we’re continually looking within our talented seasonal staff to fill full-time opportunities within the company. Wherever possible, we also connect our staff with career-advancing opportunities outside of Plato Learning.
● Community. Containing hundreds of creative-minded heroes, the Plato Learning network carries authors, podcasters, performers, dungeon masters, and many others ready to chat and create.
● Free Camp. If you have children, you will be provided with free camp sessions for every camp week you work or if you don’t have children, you can gift one week of free camp to someone else.
