Salary Range: $61,745 – $145,567

Job Summary

This position is primarily concerned with the gathering and preparation of spatial data obtained, analyzed, and directed by Planning and Financial Services in the Facilities Department. The work predominantly involves knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), web mapping, enterprise spatial databases, and data management. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Planning.

Essential Responsibilities – specific to this job

Creates, maintains, and develops spatial and non-spatial datasets on:

  • Attendance area boundaries
  • Current and prospective residential development within Prince William County, in collaboration with Supervisor of CIP and Land Acquisition
  • Prince William County addresses and their assigned elementary, middle, high schools, and political districts

Creates, maintains, and develops school facility floor plans

  • Uses ArcGIS Pro to maintain school floor plan data in a GIS
  • Ground truths GIS floor plan data and portable classroom utilization data using ArcGIS Collector or similar field data collection application
  • Plans and implements procedures for maintaining current information on classroom utilization, in collaboration with Senior GIS Analyst

Provides customer service

  • Receives questions from school-based customers, researches errors, and resolves the issue in a timely manner
  • Works directly with Prince William County’s Geospatial Technology Services department to share and maintain integrity of spatial data
  • Provides customer service for questions related to web mapping applications hosted on Planning’s Portal

Supports the enrollment projection and boundary planning processes

Creates StoryMaps for a variety of planning initiatives

Serves as webmaster for the Planning Portal built on ESRI’s Sites platform

Produces and shares maps using ArcGIS Pro, web mapping applications, and PowerPoint, showing:

  • Location of school facilities
  • School Division owned property
  • School attendance areas
  • School building floor plans
  • Other data as required

Creates dashboards on school planning data using ESRI’s Dashboards application or similar application

Produces publications and applications that comply with accessibility protocols

Creates tutorial videos for web mapping applications using Camtasia (or comparable screen recording application)

Prepares ad hoc reports from information in various databases as requested

Responds to requests for information from parents, principals, School Division staff, School Board members, and others

Prepares and maintains metadata and documentation on techniques used to collect, analyze, summarize, and present data

Proactively identifies and promotes potential industry best practices

Reports to work daily

Performs tasks in a regular, reliable, and predictable manner

Completes other duties as assigned

Qualifications for Successful Performance

Ability to create and curate authoritative GIS data on school facilities, floor plans, student enrollment geocodes, and school attendance areas

  1. Skills and experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro
  2. Ability to create web maps, story maps, and web-mapping applications published with either ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS
  3. Experience with creating, running, and maintaining spatial analysis workflows in ModelBuilder or Python
  4. Ability to use, or learn, various software programs, including Adobe Acrobat, Camtasia (or similar screen recording application), PyCharm (or comparable IDE), and Microsoft 365 (e.g., Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with School Division personnel, real estate marketing representatives, county government personnel, and community members
