Zymergen’s Software Engineering Team plays a critical role in fulfilling the company’s mission. Creating designer microbes can be a slow and complex process. Our custom software helps combine biology, robotic automation, and proprietary computational and analytic methods to make microbe and chemical design a reliable, industrialized process. This process, at the heart of Zymergen’s business, is what distinguishes us from our competitors.Our teams are responsible for a broad range of services including developing data models, data capture services, data processing pipelines, and analysis tools that are crucial to the company’s success; organizing and integrating the many kinds of data used at Zymergen; and partnering with internal users to provide UI/UX design and development. Software Engineering interns will gain exposure to a fast-growing software stack built by a team with extensive experience and a broad range of expertise. Interns get to define and see the impact of their interdisciplinary work by interacting directly with the research assistants, scientists, and engineers who use our software on a daily basis to advance the state of the art.  Apply today to help Zymergen realize the future of technology, biology, automation, and computation.Job Description and Focus Areas (Core Infrastructure)Areas of focus may include:Relational database structure and performanceAPI design and deploymentData pipelinesSearch infrastructure, with elastic searchContainerized application deployment, including serverless and Kubernetes modelsQualifications/ExperienceCandidates currently pursuing their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or other related disciplines with one or more semesters/quarters remaining after the internship concludes.  Experience with Python, MySQL, Linux and AWS are helpful. Previous experience in the field of synthetic biology is not essential. Job Description and Focus Areas (Data Engineering)Interns on the Data Engineering Team will help us expand our data collection, data processing, and analytics platform as well as the underlying infrastructure and services that power various engineering efforts. Data Engineering interns will join other software engineers in a team including biologists and automation experts designing, building, operating, and continually upgrading an integrated, end-to-end system supporting the automation of DNA design and assembly, chemical design, microbial testing, and data analysis. Specific projects vary by internship. Areas of focus may include:Ingesting and modelling new data sources related to biomanufacturing and fermentation systems, DNA and RNA sequences, gene metadata, proteins and small molecules, metabolic pathways, etc.Building data access tools for querying, combining, and analysing biological, chemical, and manufacturing process data.Building data processing / ETL pipelines to migrate, transform, and combine data from multiple sources and make it useful to scientists and analystsStream processing via Kafka and Kafka StreamsBatch data processing and running machine learning models using AirflowOptimizing data processing and robust analytics pipelines to deliver data to scientists timely and efficientlyBuilding, maintaining, and monitoring database and data processing infrastructureData Warehouse design and implementation optimized for flexible querying and analyticsQualifications/ExperienceCandidates currently pursuing their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related disciplines with one or more semesters/quarters remaining after the internship concludes..  Experience with Python or Java Experience with SQL and query optimizationExperience with one or more database technologiesComfortable using the Linux CLIKnowledge of Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) Job Description and Focus Areas (UI/UX)Areas of focus may include:Research, design, prototype, and build software functionality for users throughout ZymergenWork with scientists, engineers, and researchers to improve their workflowsAnalyze usage patterns and trends and make data-driven decisions for new featuresQualifications/ExperienceCandidates currently pursuing their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics, computational biology, metabolic engineering, bioengineering, or related disciplines with one or more semesters/quarters remaining after the internship concludes.An interest or background in biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology, data visualization, user-research, UI/UX, and/or front-end development desiredExperience with Angular, AngularJS, React, Javascript, HTML, and/or CSS desired Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
