You will work independently to both apply and extend commercial/opensource/LLNL software tools to develop physics-based simulation code in focus areas including volume-of-fluid and Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) simulations of droplet printing processes. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) of the Engineering Directorate. Essential Duties- Conduct modeling and simulation of droplet jetting processes, including droplet break-up, morphology, flight dynamics, heat transfer, and solidification.- Employ and extend continuum (i.e., finite volume or finite element) commercial, open-source, and/or LLNL simulation codes to implement models and perform droplet simulations.- Develop computational models and perform analyses of applications involving coupled structural, fluid, thermal, and/or chemical phenomena.- Work with engineers and scientists to identify and solve challenging simulation and modeling problems.- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory.- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.- Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications- Recent Ph.D. in engineering, mathematics, computational science, or a related field.- Experience developing or modifying simulations using continuum (finite-element/ finite-volume) approaches for flow physics problems.- Knowledge of finite element methods or finite volume methods in both theory and application.- Experience programming in C/C++, FORTRAN, Python or similar languages.- Knowledge of analysis, modeling and simulation tools.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information. Desired Qualifications- Experience developing continuum simulations for modeling two-phase systems using volume-of-fluid or Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approaches.- Experience with coupled fluid flow and heat-transfer simulation, including simulation of liquid solidification processes.- Experience with massively parallel computing and significant experience in C and C++ programming.Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
