Joel Effron, BS + MS IEOR ’67
Joel Effron began his career in the Industrial Engineering department at Trans World Airlines (TWA), where he developed a non-classical queueing theory model to staff ticket and gate counters based on dynamic passenger arrival patterns and fluctuating flight schedules. This innovative approach was adopted systemwide. Drawing on ergonomic principles learned at Berkeley, Joel also designed standardized modular ticket and gate counters used throughout TWA’s global operations. In collaboration with TWA’s Operations Research group, he helped optimize the airline’s reservation system by creating a daily, flight-specific overbooking algorithm that increased revenue while managing risk. His work also extended to airline safety, where he developed procedures to prevent potential hijackings, and later led the development of TWA’s highly successful worldwide customer quality assurance program.
After leaving TWA, Joel went on to serve as president and COO of three companies: California’s largest non-utility provider of business telephone systems, a broadcast and entertainment firm, and a specialty computer manufacturer. He concluded his career as an executive at a public company serving the rapidly expanding Internet connectivity sector. Joel and his wife now reside in Palm
Desert, California.
