Design the "MacroLab" for the new CITRIS Building

Background:
CITRIS UC Berkeley's Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, was recently established by the College of Engineering to facilitate collaborative research on a range of new technologies that benefit societal issues. Areas of interest include: energy efficiency, transportation, environmental monitoring, seismic safety, education, cultural research, and health care. See http://www.citris.berkeley.edu/ (general info).

The campus is currently constructing a new CITRIS building on the North Side of campus. See: http://www.citris-uc.org/about/capital_projects (the new building)

The CITRIS building will include temporary research space for related projects, administration, a coffeeshop, and a new campus MicroLab (where experimental silicon chips are fabricated). A group of faculty have also proposed creating a "MacroLab", a lab space for undergraduates to design, prototype, and display innovative information technology projects of societal interest, especially those related to the environment. The MacroLab should reflect the goals of CITRIS and should be functional, providing design and construction resources such as computers and workbenches and space for teaching and presentations (for example incorporating plants and other natural materials).

The MacroLab must be sustainable in terms of costs, security, and sharing of its resources among many students and faculty. The MacroLab must also present an appropriate view of ongoing activity and outcomes to visitors (potential students, sponsors, etc) at any time of day.

Your team assignment: design a detailed concept plan for the MacroLab. Your design should begin with a detailed assessment of the goals, resources, budget, and constraints, proceeding through the Ten Step Design Process, adapted suitably for this assignment.
