IEOR Assistant Professor Javad Lavaei has just been awarded a $1 million grant to support his work on nonlinear optimization from the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Ken will come to the role after a distinguished career of service marked by achievement in research and leadership at Cal.
Mauricio G. C. Resende was chosen to be a 2016 INFORMS fellow. Resende received his PhD in Operations Research ('87) at the University of California Berkeley. Currently, he works as a principle research scientist for Amazon.com, Inc.
According to INFORMS, Mauricio G. C. Resende was selected as an INFORMS fellow "for major contributions to the development and application of metaheuristics for optimization problems, including the invention of the widely-used Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP)."
Professor Shmuel Oren will present a public workshop at the Annual International Conference – Electricity 2016 to be held in Eilat Israel November 8-11.

Earlier we announced that IEOR Professor Shmuel Oren had been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Today, it is official — Shmuel has been inducted to the NAE for his contributions 'to the integration of decisions and cooperative market mechanisms for adaptive multisource electrical power systems.'
On October 11, 2016, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research awarded 58 scientists and engineers approximately $20.8 million in grants as a part of their Young Investigator Research Program (YIP).
Today, the Industrial Engineering & Operations Research Department at University of California Berkeley welcomed students to the new year at the annual Fall Picnic. In total, approximately 200 students participated from each of IEOR's academic programs including undergraduate students studying Industrial Engineering & Operations Research, Operations Research & Management Science as well as graduate students from the Master of Engineering and M.S. / Ph.D. programs.
