Ikhlaq Sidhu, professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research at the University of California, Berkeley, and faculty director and chief scientist at the UC Berkeley Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology has been awarded the 2018 Major Education Innovation Award by the IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) for his contributions in entrepreneurship pedagogy and innovative teaching methods.

The UC Berkeley Laboratory for Automation Science and Engineering (AUTOLAB) was featured in the New York Times today for its research on robotic grasping. The article featured AUTOLAB's Dex-Net robot which can pick up and sort objects that it has never encountered before using machine learning and neural network algorithms.

IEOR Professor Dorit Hochbaum has just been awarded $400,000 by the National Science Foundation to investigate new techniques aiming to reduce manufacturing costs and enhance quality. Besides reducing costs, applications of the research aim to improve societal welfare with broad applications such as enhancing public health, and detecting spam online.

IEOR professors Javad Lavaei and Alper Atamturk have been awarded $360,000 in funding by the National Science Foundation to investigate computational methods for mixed-integer programs in power systems. The research will take place from 2018-2021.
