IEOR Admissions FAQs
Q:
Where can I get information on the IEOR gradate programs?
A: Please follow the Academic Programs link above.
Q:

A: The admissions committee cannot assess the chances
of admission. A complete application must be submitted before an application
can be evaluated.
Q: Do I need an undergraduate degree in Engineering to pursue a graduate degree in IEOR?
A: No, you only need a solid math background. An engineering degree is not required.
Q:Can
I study towards a graduate degree in Industrial Engineering part time?
A: The IEOR degree programs are designed for full time study only. There
are no evening courses. The Department does not allow part-time graduate
study.
Q:
How long does it take to complete an M.S. degree? Ph.D. degree?
The Master of Science program usually requires between two to three
semesters to complete the 24 units of course work.
The Ph.D. program is generally completed in 4-5 years.
Q:What
is the cost of graduate study at UC Berkeley?
A: Please see the Graduate Division webpage for Costs
and Fees .
Q:
Does the IEOR department offer financial aid to incoming students?
A: A small number of fellowships and assistantships
are available to incoming students (between 3-5 students). They are
generally awarded to Ph.D. applicants. MS students are typically self
funded. You do not need to apply for fellowships separately. All students
applied before the financial aid deadline are considered for fellowships
and teaching assistantship. In addition, research assistantships may
be available to qualified incoming students if there are open positions.
If you are interested in a research assistantship position with a faculty
member, contact the faculty member individually after (not before) you
are admitted.
Q: Are there other sources of financial aid?
A: There are many organizations offering financial aid to US citizens and permanent residents. We encourage you to apply for all external financial aid that you are eligible. If you are offered an external financial aid less than we offer through fellowships, please contact the email address at the bottom of this page. Typically we are able to match it so that you are not disadvantaged by taking the external aid. Please see list of external financial aid sources.

cases if a students record is outstanding in all other aspects.
Q:

A: Although there is no official minimum quantitative score for admission,
no student with a quantitative score less than 700 has been admitted
in the last few years.

A: No Subject test is required. However, we encourage applicants to
submit a GRE Math Subject Test score, particularly if you do not have
a strong mathematics course background.
Q: Do I need to submit a TOEFL score?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all international applicants who received their undergraduate degree at a university or college in a country where English is not the official language. However, if at the time of application, you have already completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or better at a U.S. university, you do not need to take the TOEFL. Instead, you must submit an official transcript from the U.S. university.
Please review the TOEFL instruction on the Graduate Divison website for additional TOEFL information including countries in where study does not exempt you from submitting a TOEFL score.
Having lived and worked in the US or another English-speaking country does not satisfy the English Language Requirement.
No exceptions will be made by the department, please do not send us a waiver of TOEFL request.
Q: Should I apply for the MS program, the MS/PhD program, or the PhD program?
A: If you are interested in working towards a PhD and already have an MS, you should apply for the PhD program. If you are interested in a PhD and do not already have an MS degree, you should apply for the MS/PhD program. If you are interested in ending your studies with an MS degree, apply for that program. On rare occasions, students move from the MS to the PhD program, but this is the exception, not the rule.
Q: Does the Department require applicants to contact faculty before submitting an application?
No. Applicants should not have a reason to contact faculty prior to applying for admission.
Q: What is the process for submitting letters of recommendation?
ONLY online letters submitted through the department online letter service will be accepted. Please see the admission procedure page on our site and review them thoroughly before submitting your university online application.
http://www.ieor.berkeley.edu/Admissions/Grad/index.htm
Note: only 3 recommenders are required - if more than 3 are submitted, the first three names only will be accepted and considered.
Q: If I apply ON the deadline, will my recommenders be able to submit their letters in time for the review?
Recommenders have until the end of January to submit their letters. PLEASE NOTE: The only documents we will accept after the January 5th is the online letter of recommendations. No additional documents will be accpeted after the Jan 5th deadline. If your application is not complete at that time it will be considered incomplete and reviewed as it is. Your Recommenders will be asked to submit their letters by online and notified that they have until the end of the month.
Q: Can I include papers I have written or a resume with my online application?
There is a place in the online application which enables you to include 5 URLs of your homepage and publications. It appears after the screen in which you provide names and e-mails of your recommenders. Please do not submit hardcopies. Only transcripts should be mailed to the department.
Q: How can I check the status of my application and submitted transcripts:
A: After you have submitted your online application, you will get periodic e-mails notifying you of any received supporting documents. Your application will not be reviewed until all materials have been received. Although you may have already mailed your transcripts they may appear as not received for some time, as they must manually be scanned into the database. We generally will not bgin to scan transcripts until late Nov, early Dec.
Please do not contact our office to check on the status of your application. Due to the large volume of applications processed by our department, we are unable to check on individual applications.

at the end of January. A thorough evaluation of hundreds of applications
requires significant time. Most admission recommendations are made by
